In a suburb of Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, and located on the slopes of the Vitoscha Mountains, is the country’s most worshipped-in historic building, Boyana Church. It actually comprises three churches that over the centuries have grown into a single entity. The first building covers an area of six square metres and after two centuries, a further two storey high church was added. The adjoining third church followed in the nineteenth century and is a unique combination of various architectural epochs. The view of the western wall and circular ceiling of the Narthex, is quite breathtaking as they are completely covered with art. Restoration work has taken place for several years and since 2002 Boyana Church has been open to the public.

On the upper reaches of the Volga, around two hundred and eighty kilometres north of Moscow, is the Russian town of Uglich. The Dimitrijvskaija Church is crowned with blue, onion-shaped domes that are adorned with stars. It was built in 1692 out of stone and replaced a wooden church. Everywhere are illustrations of the mysterious death of the heir to the throne on the fifteenth of May, 1591. The red colour of the church is a symbol of bloodshed. Ivan the Terrible had two sons. The eldest, Fjodor Ivanovitch, was thought to be insane but was crowned anyway and was supported by Boris Godunov. As Godunov’s sister, Irina, was married to Fjodor Ivanovitch, his dream of becoming Tsar was almost a reality. When news that the eight year old, Zarevitch, had fatally run into a knife while playing, it caused havoc. Three hundred years later the symbol of the Dimitrijevskaija Blood Church was returned to the place in which the savage deed had taken place. Subsequently, the Romanov Dynasty ruled for three centuries and Uglich became a place of sadness and remembrance of one of the most spectacular events in Russian history.

Cathedrals are an important part of the religious world, great works of art that unite cultural history and architecture in a remarkable way. The Stephansdom in Vienna is one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world and is also one of the most cherished buildings in Austria. The Gothic splendour of the cathedral is on show for all to see and its architectural and artistic treasures that date back to the Middle Ages are a priceless heritage for future generations. As if to highlight its special significance and situated in the small Finnish town of Kerim’, the Kerimaen Kirkko proudly rises into the sky. Close to the fascinating lake district of the Savonlinna region, the inhabitants of Kerim’ wanted to have a church that was a little different: 40 meters long and 42 meters wide, Kerim’ Church is the largest timber built Christian church in the world. Seville Cathedral, the Catedral De Santa Marie La Sede, is the most important church in the Andalusian metropolis. This magnificent building is the largest Gothic cathedral and also the third largest Christian church in the world. It replaced the former Islamic Seville Mosque that was built by the Almohades in 1198. Throughout the ages these fascinating cathedrals have focused the minds of the faithful and have each, in their own way, become immortal.
